I REALLY THOUGHT I’D DREAD THE WINTER. Now that it’s here—unavoidably so—I really don’t much mind. Yesterday morning I walked out the door and began the trail to class. The first thing I noticed was an impeccable calmness that had overtaken my surroundings. There was not a sound, no cars screeching on the streets, no doors opening or closing, no sirens or horns. Only a light snowfall that extended the whiteness of the earth; an awakening. For two and a half blocks, I meditated in frost-coated silence.

Of Heidi

HEIDI IS MY SISTER—my big, little sister with skinny bird legs, one bearing a scar of a childhood day together. Heidi is tough as stone and quick with words, sarcastic to a “t,” witty and sharp. She knows what she wants and works until she gets it.
When you put Heidi and I together, she becomes the voice of reason that brings me down from the clouds and back to reality. She’s my balance: logical, analytical, with sincere brevity. She says what I don’t want to admit, always watches her watch, always punctual, always business. She has a great contagious laugh which she gets from our mother, along with nearly everything else (except her cooking “skills”—those were aptly learned, definitely not genetic). She sets herself up for success.
If I had to choose a little sister, it would be Heidi —otherwise we’d have never met. We have nothing in common but our parents and perhaps the same nose, sharing the same story growing up, and the same bath water. She has taught me a few lessons and I look up to her—well, I have to. She’s taller than me.

Early Risings

TODAY IS OFF TO A GREAT START—I spent the morning at my clients’ apartment helping them get ready for work. As much as I admit to not being a morning person, I very much enjoy being a part of their routine. They add the jet pack I need to boost my day!
I grabbed coffee after my shift, and it was only 9am. Nine! And to think of everything I’d already accomplished. Normally before nine I sleep and sometimes get myself ready for the day. When I got home I felt motivated to do the things I helped with earlier in the morning: Make my bed, put my clothes away, eat a healthy breakfast, and be thankful for my wellness.
Now at the library, I’m giddy about the discovery of a landmine of design books on the “New Books” shelf. I checked out three and I’m looking forward to devouring them when I get off work tonight…
The books I checked out…

& a lovely day to all —

I love simple things like this. So much clever!

Helmut Smits is an idea machine—or “multidisciplinary visual artist”—based in Rotterdam, Netherlands (which makes sense why I like it). I’m uncertain how I can across them, but the approach to art is delightful. Here are a few samples of their work, and be sure to mosey on over to their site to check out the rest!
