Miss Heidi Comes to Town
My sister Heidi came to visit me for nearly a week — I showed her about the city as best I could!
My favorite day we spent together was at Rockaway Beach. We laid our sheet too close to the water, and eventually the tide washed us out. It was comical to wash off the sand, wring out the water, and attempt to air dry the sheet before we headed back home (Heidi told me I would never survive in the wild.)
heat wave
I speak for the other 7.99 million folks of New York when I say we’ve been experiencing the most miserably crazy heat over the past two days. So hot that you apply twice the deodorant and stick to your subway seat like a noodle.
Heat doesn’t keep me from exploring. I’ve been wandering the east side a bit over the past few weeks, and today it was time for the wild, wild west side — and after three hours of strolling, I can say quite confidently that the WS has become my new favorite (for now).
New York really wears me down, but experiences like today make everything seem really fantastic.

Finally, I MET TIM GUNN on Tuesday as he walked into Parson’s on 7th Avenue. I told him how much I adored him, and he shook my hand and asked my name. It completely made my MONTH! (I am still saying aloud to no one in particular, “I CAN’T BELIEVE I MET TIM GUNN.”)
I had a fantastic weekend with family visiting from North Dakota, South Dakota, and California — many things on the agenda that I don’t usually get to do in the city! Thank you for all the groovy company and good times! And on that note…

Thank you to my faithful reader Eric for tipping me off about this special sunset in Manhattan this evening. I was pleased to see crowds of people gathering on street corners as sundown approached, waiting for the right moment when the sun perfectly aligned with the Manhattan street grid. So comical to see viewers run into the street at red lights to snap a photo (I was one of those people)! Unfortunately the latter part of the descent was spoiled by cloud cover, but there were still several minutes of glory.
Check this out for more on Manhattanhenge — and thanks again, Eric!
Best,
jc
